The deck,
about 14' wide and 10' deep, is one of the most used spaces
in this small cabin. It adds a lot of utility at very
low cost per square foot.
I used the ubiquitous Trex lumber for decking, a plastic/wood
composite that feels great under bare feet, needs no maintenance,
and has a slight do-good 'green' aura, due to some recycled
content. I even used it for the table top in a contrasting
color.
Our prevailing winds are from the north and northwest,
so even on brisk cold days this south facing space can
be used. Much work is done here, like grinding flour and
doing dishes. On occasion, we've had lunch here in december.
The
awning extends usage into the heat of summer, and helps
keep the cabin relatively cool. It consists of three overlapping
panels of Sunbrella fabric, a marine product that has
excellent UV resistance. The panels are laced to tensioned
stainless steel wires, and easily slides in and bundles
up under a small eave by the wall when not in use. As
always with odd owner built contraptions, there was a
lot of thought going into this before committing to a
design. Maybe because of this, it has worked out fabulously.
