We
reached a total charge of 50000 amp-hours on October
17, 2008, almost exactly 5 years after exposing our
solar panels to the sun for the first time. An average
of 10000 AH per year to fuel the electric needs of a
family of three, plus running a part time wood shop
building small
sailboats. This is not much. Some friends use that
amount in an afternoon.
The system still works perfectly, with a minimum of
needed maintenance. Nothing has broken, nothing have
been replaced. We can proclaim it an absolute success!
The socalled weak link, our battery bank comprised
of four Trojan 105, is still the original. The estimated
life is 4-5 years, but with a care it seems likely that
we will be able to extend the use of these little units
a bit further.
The components
needed to control and distribute the various currents
take up a small space on the wall in the living room.
A much neater arrangement is certainly possible!
Thanks
to LED lights, energy efficient appliances and a somewhat
minimalistic lifestyle we are able to function quite comfortably
with this setup. No huge changes are forecasted for the
next 5 years.
